Apple to disband the iPod Classic and Shuffle?

iPod ClassicIt is reported that Apple are about to make some major changes to its range of iPods with the Classic and Shuffle set to be discontinued. Since the arrival of the iPod Touch, there have been constant rumours that these devices were to be axed but the latest news seems to suggest this is now a possibility. The website TUAW reports that a source had told them that both models are "getting the axe this year".

As recently as March this year Steve Jobs had stated there were no plans on getting rid of the Classic and Shuffle devices. The iPod Classic will be ten years old in a month time and in recent years has had only minor developments made to it with its storage capacity being changed from 80GB to 160GB.

The iPod Shuffle is now in its fourth generation having debuted back in 2005 and has struggle to compete alongside another Apple product, the iPod Nano. The touch screen capabilities of the Nano has seen the demise of the Shuffle. The Nano is expected to become the entry level for the iPod range.

Apple are holding an event on the 4th October, where it is expected they will revealed a new iPhone as the invitation sent out read, “let's talk iPhone". Reports have also suggested the iPod Touch will be given an update with a 3G version possible. It will be interesting to see if Apple do make an announcement with regards to its iPod range.
